Save my infoSearch before you transfer
Transfers from bank points into an airline or hotel program are almost always one-way and permanent. Confirm the exact award seat or room is available first, then transfer, then book immediately.
Be flexible on the day, not the destination
Award space is uneven. Shifting your departure by a day or two, or flying midweek, often halves the points required. Search a whole month at once wherever the program allows it.
Book early or book late
Award calendars typically open about eleven to twelve months ahead, and airlines sometimes release unsold seats a few weeks before departure. The middle stretch is the thinnest.
The good-enough test
Compare the cash price to the points required. If the points are saving you real money you'd otherwise spend, and the itinerary works for your life, book it. Waiting for a perfect redemption is how a decade goes by without the trip.
Take this with you
- Confirm availability before transferring points anywhere.
- Flexible dates beat flexible destinations.
- A good redemption you book beats a great one you don't.
Sit with this
If a seat opened next month to the place you wrote down in Lesson 1, what would actually stop you?
